Ashbourne

15 Minutes Drive

 

Follow signs from Ilam.
Ashbourne is still a market town and you can find the local market there on Thursdays and Saturdays. It is a lovely town, full of cobbled alleys, Antique shops, giftware shops, upmarket boutiques and Derwent Crystal has a shop there.
Ashbourne's Farmers market is every 1st Saturday of the Month at the Bus Station. Ashbourne also has a Chinese, Indian, Italian and a number of Bistro’s and restaurants for you to enjoy. most of these do takeaways. (See Places to Eat)

 

Bakewell

20 Minutes Drive

 

Bakewell is 20 minutes drive from our cottage.
From Alstonefield take A515 North. (Famous for its pudding) has an excellent market on Mondays and Saturdays.

 

Alton Towers Theme Park

15 Minutes Drive

 

Alton Towers Theme Park is 15 minutes drive away
Go to Ilam, cross the bridge and up to Blore. Turn right at the crossroads. After a mile or so you will come to the main A52 road. Go straight across the crossroads. After another mile or so you will see a left turn signposted Alton Towers and Cheadle, Turn left here and follow signs for Alton Towers you will need to turn left again at Oakamoor but it is signposted all the way.

 

Buxton

30 Minutes Drive

 

From Alstonefield take the A515 North directly to Buxton. There are many things to do in Buxton.
It has the pavilion gardens with walks, Train rides and children’s play areas for all ages.
The Royal Mews (similar to Bath in Avon).
Buxton Opera House – (01298 72190) A brilliant theatre.
Pavilion swimming pool. Antiques centre. Good shops and Supermarkets.
Buxton is split into 3 sections. As you drive in off the A515 you will find the old market place, which looks really run down. But drive down the hill on the other side and you will find NEW Buxton. In fact they have recently refurbished the Roman Baths and Victorian Pavilions. To the left of this area you have the pedestrian shopping area with well-known shops such as Marks & Spenser’s. Try Buxton’s famous water, it’s free, just remember to take a bottle and fill it up outside the Royal Mews near the Information centre and Gardens.

 

Matlock and Matlock Bath

30 Minutes Drive

 

Matlock and Matlock Bath is 30 minuetes drive away.
There you will find Gullivers Kingdom 01629 580540 (smaller version of Alton Towers up to age 8/9).
Its very steep though, so hard on the legs but very good for the children. The Heights of Abraham Cable cars 01629 582365 Riber Castle and other attractions are also to be had there.
Matlock Bath is full of hundreds of Motor Bikes on a Sunday. Great if you like that, otherwise give it a miss as its gets very busy.

 

Leek

20 Minutes Drive

 

Famous for its Antique centres.
Blackbrook Wildlife Park and Zoo just outside of Leek on the A52 Tittersworth Reservoir off A53 just outside of Leek towards Buxton.

 

Chatsworth House

25 Minutes Drive

 

Chatsworth House is always worth a visit and is about 25 minutes away.
Home of the Duke & Duchess of Devonshire and quite breathtaking if you’ve never seen it. 01246 582204
There is also an adventure playground, Gift shops and Restaurants. Farm shop at Pilsley 01246 583392
Chatsworth Garden centre On Route at Rowsley you will find the Peak Shopping Retail Outlet and The Peter Rabbit Experience! And the Wind in the Willows experienceOther Country Houses locally include, Hardwick Hall, Haddon Hall, Kedleston Hall, Sudbury House, Little Moreton Hall, Elvaston Castle & Calke Abbey (01335 865699)

 

Caverns

 

 

There are many Caverns In the northern part of the park around Buxton.

Remember to take something warm, as it gets very cold down there!

 

Carsington Water

15 Minutes Drive

 

Carsington Water - 01629 540696 is 15 minutes away. It caters for all types of water sports from beginner to advanced. There is also a tourist centre, wildlife & nature reserve as well as a sailing school.

 

Derby

35 Minutes Drive

 

Derby is 35 minutes away.
A52 from Ashbourne has two 10 screen cinemas – UCI and Showcase. There are also your usual large city sports facilities, i.e. Ten Pin Bowling, Quasar, Nightlife etc

 

Stoke

40 Minutes Drive

 

Stoke is 40 minutes away.
A52 from Leek is the home of the potteries, there you will find the famous china & potteries centres, Royal Dolton, Wedgwood, Spode. There is also a Waterworld out of town.

 

Derwent Steam Trains

30 Minutes Drive

 

Derwent steam train runs from Darley Dale (01629 735318) you may also find Thomas the Tank Engine there. Other Train attractions locally include The Tramway museum at Crich (or Cardale if you like Peak Practice). Foxfield light railway is nearer to Stoke as is the North Staffordshire Steam Centre.
